DC Students Gain Confidence from Public Speaking Lecture Series

March 18, 2014

Olivet University's School of Media and Communication Washington DC extension campus held a series of lectures on public speaking by Ms. Marilou Donahue during the Winter quarter. Students have gained much confidence in their abilities to speak in public.

"You are your product, the way you look, carry yourself and the way you speak, we speak to communicate with others," Ms. Marilou Donahue, the former host of TV program "Artistically Speaking" and member of the National Press Club highlighted on the very first lecture.

Based on her long experience in interviewing celebrities, Donahue illustrated with examples the appropriate attitudes as an interviewer.

"Show respect to the person. Never be angry. A good speaker is also a good listener. Listen well, not just asking question, and think before you say. We can all better, work in progress," she encouraged the journalists-to-be.

Donahue's lectures have received positive feedback from students. "Her lecture was really helpful for me. I could improve my way of speaking by slowing down and thinking about my audience," said one master’s student.

Olivet University's OSMC DC extension campus plans to invite more skillful media professionals to offer lecture series on other important topics.
