OTCS Systematic Theology Course Delves into Solid Theological Topics

August 08, 2019

Olivet Theological College & Seminary (OTCS) students explore foundational and solid theological topics in their systematic theology summer quarter class. The course, taught by Dr. Cheung, is offered for Master of Divinity students. The course is the second of a three-part series that concentrates on topics such as the nature and effects of sin, the nature of salvation, and its evidence. Further exploration includes evaluation of different perspectives on the foregoing subjects.

The lectures are based on Millard J Erickson's Christian Theology and Louis Berkhof's Systematic Theology.

Each class consists of two sessions - lecture and group discussion. The professor expounded on the day's lesson followed by student group discussion on trends and application of the topic.

"This lesson was mainly about redemption. Through the lesson, I sorted out a lot about the meaning of redemption through Jesus Christ, and it became much clearer," said theology student Janice Liu.

"The absolute doctrine of atonement was believed to give rise to the logical problem of making Judas as the hero to achieve the cross of redemption," said Dr. Cheung. "The reformer's advocation could avoid this problem by highlighting the will of God in eliminating the sins through redemption offered by Christ on the cross. This is the sacrificial love of God," commented Cheung.

The class had met five times during the summer quarter and discussed important theological topics such as the humanity of Jesus. The remaining class meetings will look into future topics such as the state of humiliation, the state of exaltation and the atonement.
