July 15, 2021

The Commencement Ceremony 2021 of Olivet University supplies the doctoral graduates of Zinzendorf School of Doctoral Studies (ZSDS) with the time of celebration. The faithful God granted exceeding fruits this time with around 50 doctoral graduates who attended the ceremony either onsite at the OU’s main campus or online worldwide. The commencement was the culmination of many years of work and the long-desired fulfillment of hope.

Doctor of Ministry graduate (Class of 2021) Jana Rebrova gave a speech on behalf of the student body of Olivet University. “We may feel that now that we finished our studies, let me take a break. Instead, let us stay determined to continue to study, challenge ourselves, let us not avoid tears and sacrifice, but in difficult times seek comfort from Jesus Christ and let us be those who always chose the difficult path, overcome and give glory to God,” Rebrova said.

The ceremony was more than a celebration of the achievement of doctoral graduates. It was an offering of thankfulness and praise to God. May God continue to bless our doctoral graduates to influence positively for the kingdom of God onward!

Ph.D. Virtual Colloquium Concluded with Productive Outcomes

Ph.D. Virtual Colloquium Concluded with Productive Outcomes

June 15, 2021

The Zinzendorf School of Doctoral Studies (ZSDS) successfully concluded the Ph.D. doctoral colloquium. The colloquium was held remotely in a hybrid format for five weeks with Ph.D. students and professors from all over the globe.

The purpose of the colloquium is to prepare students for their Ph.D. examinations and writing a dissertation in global theology. It provides a learning interaction between professors and students for students to develop their knowledge and expertise in the field of global theology through extensive readings, writing papers, and peer discussions. The colloquium also works with the student in preparing them to develop a prospectus for writing a Ph.D. dissertation.

At each meeting, each student presents their specific area of interest in front of fellow students. Through the opportunity, the student gains feedback from other participants so that he or she can develop the theme more in-depth.

“The colloquium was very important in receiving criticism for our papers so that we can clarify and polish the contents. I was also really touched by the number of important topics that students are tackling that will contribute to God’s Kingdom,” shared Lily Zeng, a second-year Ph.D. student.

D.Min. Program’s Ministry Tracks Celebrate More Successful Oral Defenses

D.Min. Program’s Ministry Tracks Celebrate More Successful Oral Defenses

May 22, 2021 UPDATED 03:25 PM PT

Over 10 Doctoral of Ministry (D.Min.) candidates at the Zinzendorf School of Doctoral Studies (ZSDS) recently passed the oral defenses of their D.Min. final papers. The ministry tracks celebrate their success and the hard work of their mentor faculty.

In the presence of their mentors, the candidates’ oral defenses were reviewed by the Doctoral Committee, who asked questions and offered suggestions for the completion of the candidates’ dissertations. There were multiple fascinating topics to be covered as D.Min. candidates made a presentation based on their unique ministerial experiences and cultural backgrounds.

For instance, in the Education Track, Jana Rebrova presented her research on Czech and Slovak Evangelicalism from the vantage point of the missionary. Aria Reppert covered her research on spiritual training for worship leaders and worship teams from the Church Worship and Music Track. In the Business as Mission Track, Yanping Zhang made a presentation in relation to a tentmaking training program for missionaries.

“By the grace of God, the track system has been set up successfully. I believe the outcome can enormously contribute to the kingdom of God. It is anticipated there will be many high-quality papers coming out this month,” commented Director of Doctor of Ministry Program Dr. Tom Cowley.

ZSDS holds oral defenses, offering D.Min. candidates an opportunity to present and review their thesis projects. Candidates who pass the oral defense and graduation requirements will join the commencement in June later this year.

May 22, 2021 UPDATED 11:25 AM PT

The Zinzendorf School of Doctoral Studies (ZSDS) will hold an annual colloquium for the Ph.D. Program in April. Due to the pandemic, the colloquium setting had changed to an online format. The first half of the colloquium 2020-21 was previously conducted with either a synchronous or asynchronous style, including Dr. Cleon Rogers’ seminar last October.

For the second half of the Ph.D. colloquium, the ‘Theological Hermeneutics’ seminar by Dr. Joseph Lee will be offered. This seminar aims to examine ‘the discipline of hermeneutics’ from biblical, theological, and philosophical perspectives. By means of the comprehensive approaches to the discipline of hermeneutics, it shed light on the proper fashion to understand biblical texts. The seminar will be run as an online class (synchronous) on April 12-16, 2021.

Besides, Director of Ph.D. Program Dr. Mark Wagner will offer a seminar every Thursday from April 29th to June 3rd. The seminar provides a learning interaction between professors and students in order for students to develop their knowledge and expertise in the field of global theology through diverse readings, paper presentations, and discussions.

Students are required to submit their academic papers and presentation proposal pertinent to the two upcoming seminars prior to the seminar. In a monthly Ph.D. students’ meeting, students shared that they have been conducting their independent research in theological hermeneutics and global theological studies.

Doctor of Ministry Program Holds Online Follow-up Meetings with First-Year Students

Doctor of Ministry Program Holds Online Follow-up Meetings with First-Year Students

February 3, 2021

First-year Doctor of Ministry (D.Min.) students joined online follow-up meetings with their professors in January. Professors and students were able to engage in deeper conversation on course materials.

Dr. Donald Tinder met students over a Zoom meeting for his “Theological Foundations for Ministry” course. Students were encouraged to explore both global and topical areas in the discipline of theology that were previously underdeveloped. Tinder also provided students with a global, not just a western, approach to theological reflection and its historical development.

In addition, the “Doctoral Research & Presentation” course held an online meeting with Dr. Creighton Marlowe. Students were introduced to the methods and materials necessary for adequate and appropriate doctoral research in various areas, whether it is biblical, theological, historical, missiological, or pastoral/practical.

The online meetings were highly interactive and dynamic. Since the professor had designed them based on interactive elements, the students were highly engaged in the meetings. The students were encouraged to keep their momentum through the faculty-student interaction as they start the new year.
