Students and Staff Connect at Community Radio Fundraising Event

May 06, 2026

Students and staff from Olivet University recently joined community members at a vibrant fundraising event hosted by local KOYT radio station, strengthening ties between the university and the surrounding region. Held at the scenic Knoppelasen Garden, the gathering brought together supporters for a day centered on connection, culture, and community engagement.

Six representatives from Olivet University attended the event, where they had the opportunity to build new relationships while reconnecting with familiar faces. Their presence reflected the university’s ongoing commitment to supporting local initiatives and fostering positive public relations within the community.

The fundraiser offered a lively atmosphere filled with music, Mediterranean cuisine, and shared experiences. Guests enjoyed a curated playlist of Greek music as part of this year’s “OPA! and Effervescent” theme, along with interactive elements such as games, door prizes, and a silent auction featuring a variety of items.

A highlight of the event was an educational garden tour led by Alex Calapodis, who guided attendees through the Knoppelasen grounds. The tour emphasized the importance of cultivating native plants and demonstrated how sustainable practices can help create a thriving ecosystem in the high mountain desert environment.

Culinary offerings also played a central role in the day’s festivities. Chef Alex prepared an authentic Greek meal that included spanakopita, souvlaki, and lemon potatoes. Guests were also served fresh Greek salad sourced from Sage Mountain Farms, along with a selection of imported beverages such as bubbly waters, Greek ale, pomegranate wine courtesy of Rancho del Sol Vineyard, and traditional Greek herbal tea. The meal concluded with homemade baklava, providing a sweet finish to the experience.

Live entertainment by Art Gomez and Mark Langford added to the festive spirit, creating an inviting environment for guests of all ages.

The KOYT fundraiser not only supported local radio programming but also highlighted the value of community partnerships. For Olivet University, the event served as a meaningful opportunity to engage with the local community while celebrating culture, sustainability, and shared purpose.
